Miniature donkeys bring joy to patients and NHS staff at NCH&C
Patients, families and NCH&C staff at Caroline House, Ogden Court and the Priscilla Bacon Hospice were treated to a heartwarming visit from two miniature donkeys, Pippin and Bo-Peep, this month. The furry duo from Miniature Donkeys for Wellbeing brought smiles and joy to everyone they met, brightening the day for patients and their families.
The visit was funded by the NCH&C Charitable Fund as part of a broader programme to improve patient and staff wellbeing.
Donkeys are known for their gentle nature and affectionate personalities; patients couldn't hide their delight as Pip and Bo-Peep made their rounds, stopping for pats, hugs, and photos. Animal therapy is widely recognised for its therapeutic benefits, including reducing stress, anxiety, and feelings of loneliness. The simple act of interacting with animals like miniature donkeys promote feelings of happiness and relaxation.
For NCH&C staff, the ‘mini-donk’ visit also provided a welcome break, with many commenting on how the presence of the donkeys lifted their spirits and brought a sense of joy to patients and their families. Staff members expressed their appreciation, noting that such visits not only benefit patients but also boost morale among healthcare workers.
Emma Armes, Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist at Caroline House said:
A visit from the wonderful Mini Donks is always a highlight for the unit and has so many benefits. Patients have increased motivation to sit out of bed and go outside, to meet the gentle donkeys and just forget their troubles for a little while. The donkeys have such a positive effect on everybody's wellbeing. It is lovely to see all the smiles from not just the patients, but staff too. It is a tough job at times so the visits are a real morale booster.
